The following titles are used within KARATE-JUTSU:
KANCHO
KAN=public building, CHO=long, length, excel in, leader. Means the owner of a school building or hall. The owner of a dojo. The head of an organisation. This is the title accorded to the founders of Karate-Jutsu, Kancho’s Jerome and Terry-Lynn.
HANSHI
Model Instructor. HAN = model, wise: SHI = scholar, gentleman, soldier. This title is awarded to a Kyoshi for making a significant contribution to the development of Karate-Jutsu.
KYOSHI
Master Instructor. KYO = teach : SHI = scholar, gentleman, soldier. This title is awarded to a Renshi for making a significant contribution to the development of Karate-Jutsu.
RENSHI
Training Instructor. REN = train: SHI = scholar, gentleman, soldier. This title is awarded to a Shihan for making a significant contribution to the development of Karate-Jutsu.
SHIHAN
means a teacher of teachers, a professor. Shi = teacher, master, specialist. Han = model, wise. Commonly translated as MASTER. Within Karate-Jutsu this title is accorded to ranks of Godan (5th Dan) and above unless another title such as Renshi has been awarded.
KOSHI
Senior Instructor, a lecturer. Ko = explain, discuss, talk : Shi = scholar, gentleman, warrior. There are 3 levels of Koshi within Karate Jutsu, namely Koshi, Senior Koshi and Chief Koshi. These titles may be awarded to full time instructors of 3rd /4th Dan who are representatives of Honbu.
SEMPAI
means an individual senior by way of rank or status. SEN = first, former : PAI = generation, class. All Yudansha (Black Belts) up to Yondan (4th dan) are accorded this title unless they are Instructors running their own Dojo’s in which case they are accorded the title of Sensei.
SENSEI
means one who was born before, i.e. someone with more experience. SEN= first, former, previous SEI= life, living, lifetime, birth. It is used frequently as a respectful term for schoolteachers’ lawyers, and doctors. In martial arts, it is used as a title for instructors. Within Karate-Jutsu, the title of Sensei is accorded to Dojo Heads.
