Welcome back to everyone as we kick off a new term with the first monthly edition of our newsletter to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Karate-Jutsu.

With this newsletter we wish to establish a theme of inner reflection, we wish to create a deeper communication with our parent and student body, and lastly, we wish to share the knowledge that we have acquired thus far to deepen your understanding of the Martial Arts, and therefore, hopefully, enhance and inspire positive thought forms.

We will feature the following in our newsletter:

• Future events

• Past events

• Essential administration information

• Uplifting quotations and stories

• A note from the Kancho (heads of Karate-Jutsu)

• Selective testimonials and articles from our students (all ages)

• Info and specials on our Prana Therapy Centre

• A monthly lucky draw (refer to end of newsletter for details and to find out who our

lucky August winner is)

We sincerely hope you enjoy our first edition newsletter with all the coming events and opening specials at Mountain Whisper Retreat, home to Karate-Jutsu.

Until next month, happy training

Kancho Terry-Lynn

A NOTE FROM KANCHO JEROME

Karate-Jutsu was founded 10 years ago by myself, Jerome Petersen and my wife, Terry-Lynn Hawtrey.

Many people have asked me why our surnames are different. The answer is simple – I could not get her to change hers to mine! This is not surprising after the manner in which we met – at a Martial Arts Tournament – during which she stepped forward and knocked my prize adult brown belt student to the ground. My ego was blown, but I vowed that she was the woman I was going to marry.

Our journey through the Martial Arts has taken us far and wide since then. Our traditional full-time apprenticeship under a Grand Master took seven years, during which time we were trained in various arts such as Kobujitsu (traditional Okinawan weapons), Tai Chi Chuan (Wu Li style) and various forms of alternative healing arts.

We studied the limitations of our bodies and began to understand that there was no limitation to our spirits and applied this understanding to our personal endeavours and within the teaching of our arts. We have shaped and moulded our experience into an art today that proudly encompasses the strengths and weaknesses of anyone who wishes to practice, regardless of age, temperament or physical structure.

We are mindful of one thing at all times, to better ourselves, so that there is always room for improvement.

See you in the dojos.

Kancho Jerome

“The ultimate aim of karate being neither in victory

or defeat, but rather in the perfection of one’s moral

character.”

Gichen Funakoshi(1868–1957)

(Regarded as the father of modern-day karate)
